We've watched with great interest as the presidential race goes full steam ahead with the national conventions on each side and the naming of vice presidential running mates.
The Democratic Convention in Denver seemed to go smooth as silk. Despite many doomsayers who predicted the Clintons would steer Hillary's votes elsewhere, that didn't happen. The former president and first lady made it clear that change is needed. It's needed now and they threw their complete support behind Sen. Barack Obama.
And, despite the prayers requested by religious zealots for rain of Biblical proportions, Obama's acceptance speech outside before 80,000 screaming fans had perfect weather. He made the most of it and the largest television audience ever for a national convention, 38 million, heard his eloquent words.
We've watched as the Republicans have been bitten by terrible economic conditions, a doomed war in Iraq, gas prices going through the roof, the real estate market in shambles and wondered what else could go wrong?
Two easy answers - Gov. Sarah Palin and Hurricane Gustav. Sen. John McCain chose her as a running mate - why we don't know. Of course, he did not choose Hurricane Gustav, but he got it. If the vice presidential choice didn't stun people enough, the luck of having a hurricane bear down on New Orleans again to remind us all of yet another recent Republican blunder and to disrupt the Republican Convention really hit it home. If it weren't for bad luck, they'd have no luck at all.
What does this tell us? Enough is enough. It's time for change.

You've got to be joking. You're really going to print that? So you're saying that Republicans are religious zealots? Does that make Democrats godless heathen?
Seriously…this 'editorial' is amongst the worst drivel I've ever seen. Whoever wrote this should find a new career…or at least stick to commentary on burning leaves or lost puppies.

I Couldn't agree more. First a U.S. senator spoke who left a woman in the water for five hours while he called his lawyers. Then Monica Lewinskiy's ex-boyfriend gave a speech about morality. The only glitch seemed to be the missing “integrity” speech from John Edwards.

The only accurate point about the previous statement might be “We've watched”, something liberals seem to be good at. Let's check a few facts; Democrats are the majority in both houses. The governors of 30 of the 50 states are Democrats. Democrats control 8 of the 10 largest cities in the U.S.. I guess when all you do is “watch” you don't have to claim any responsibility.
Last but not least, if we are in a “doomed” war in Iraq please explain your gauge of a successful war.
I'll echo the first comment “stick to commentary on burning leaves or lost puppies”.

The only thing I can think of is that McCain/Palin are either believers of evolution or are homosexual (or both). Why else would Hurricane Gustav strike America during the Republican National Convention? We don't really know much about these people, now do we?

So you're saying you're ignorant and have spent little or no time at all researching her background. You like to make sweeping statements about people's abilities without taking the time to make an informed decision.
Seriously, this editorial has to be a poor attempt at comedy. Jeff, please tell me you didn't write this garbage. Tell me that some wild-eyed teenager hacked the website.
I'm not necessarily sold on McCain/Palin but for crying out every time I read biased, uninformed, and hateful cr4p like this it just pushes me further into their camp.
If anyone ever doubted the bias of the media then the last week should totally clear that up. You think the DNC is over? LOL! Just tune into CNN and you'll get continuing coverage.
By the way…Ken Hayes has more time in a leadership position than Obama. That's right…our own buddy is more qualified than Obama. Good luck with that.

You must be very proud of the conduct of the protesters at tonight's speech by McCain.
While he gave a respectful nod to the Dems we got to see images of security 'taking out the trash' of people who shouted CR4P at him while he tried to make his speech.
Guess the Republicans have too much class to disrupt Obama's 'historic' speech. Maybe that's why it went so smoothly.
Personally I've bought my last Signal. You really stepped on it this time.
In any case, when the Republicans win again i can assure you I'll be quoting this article.

It is customary for news editors to endorse candidates during election years, and Jeff hasn't even gone that far with his editorial. Did you just fall off the turnip truck? Just as bigger publications do, the Signal is quite capable of offering opinion pieces on the opinion page while reporting the news in a professional and unbiased way on the (let's say it together, now) NEWS pages. Grow up.
If any further proof were needed of your methods of forming/maintaining opinions, your comments here have abundantly provided it. No wonder you have your head in the sand on so many topics when you flounce away from and refuse to read anything that doesn't regurgitate the narrow little opinions you've already formed. The first whiff of a thought that doesn't reinforce your own dittohead thinking and you pick up your marbles and flounce off. Good riddance.
And how hilarious to use the Republican squelching of some protesters and turn it around to claim the GOP has too much “class” to disrupt Obama's speech.
It should be obvious to anyone who reads (oh—sorry, I forgot—you don't read anything that is unpalatable) that there are nutcases at either extreme of the spectrum. Disrespect, lack of class, or even violent-minded intentions know no party lines. Luckily, the nutcases in Obama—who had something far more sinister in mind than heckling—never made it to the convention. They were too stupid and too drugged-up, apparently, to form much of a plan. But how awful it would've been if blind chance had brought the candidate within their range.
How interesting that you would use a small group of protesters at the Republican convention to paint all Democrats with your scornful little brush, since you've made nary an outburst (much less exacted any judgment on Republicans) about those certified nutjobs who were arrested while driving around Denver with loaded firearms and racist hate propaganda and who have actually stated that they wanted to shoot Obama!
Where's your outrage over that, Torch? Hypocrite. Most of us wouldn't insult the vast majority of Republicans by claiming that those fools represent them or that all Republicans are, by association, classless or murderous, or druggies. Why generalize from a few hecklers in St Paul? Let me guess—you're demonstrating some of that vaunted Republican “class.”

On McCain's choice.. Jeff isn't the only one who doesn't get that one—and it's not because he's ignorant or ill informed. It would've made much more sense, if McCain felt he needed a woman, to go with Kay Bailey Hutchison or some other highly respected, experienced legislator.
Palin?! If you sift through the hype on both sides, and throw out the complete nonsense (such as her baby really being her grandchild), a troubling picture emerges of a vindictive, smug, closed-minded, fiscally irresponsible grabber who is charming only when she's getting her own way and who has distorted or flat-out lied about her own dubious accomplishments.
Her journalism background certainly helps her to play well on TV and to deliver pithy sound bites, but examine each statement in turn (such as her blowhard claim that she told the federal gov't, “Thanks but no thanks… if we want a bridge we'll build it ourselves,” and you'll find empty posturing and downright lies.
For the record, the bridge was dead in the water—at the hands of the feds—before she ever switched position and opposed the bridge. She originally (when wooing the Ketchikan-area voters) supported it. And when the porkbarrel money still made its way to Alaska, she kept it to fund her own pet projects, contrary to what she implies.
Prior to that, as mayor of Wasilla, she hired lobbyists to secure staggering amounts of federal earmark money, and used it for (guess what?) her own pet projects, such as an oversized sports arena for that town of 6700, rather than spend it on, say, infrastructure the city actually needed.

All politicians—McCain, Obama, the Bushes, the Clintons—spin things to make their accomplishments shine and to minimize their opponents'. That's how the game is played. But little miss Hockey Mom takes the cake when it comes to outright distortion.
Obama's education, experience (both during and prior to his election to the US Senate), and credentials are solid and prepare him very well for the job, no matter how desperately the GOP tries to claim otherwise.
With McCain's age, history of cancer, and family heart disease, do you really want the next in line to be an extreme fundamentalist with only a BA in journalism, whose confrontational “style” has made it impossible for her to work with others (look it up) and who has neither the educational or practical experience to step onto the world stage at a moment's notice?
Vote your conscience, and don't think you'll be doing much gloating if our country is ever so unfortunate as to see Palin in the White House. It would be a disaster rivaling or even surpassing that of the failed Bush presidency. And that's saying a lot.
