Baldwin youth is ‘lucky’ after bike/car wreck

September 4, 2008

Police Chief Mike McKenna believes the difference between a minor or major bicycle-car accident Tuesday morning was a helmet.

"He was a lucky young man," said McKenna of Damian Sumner, 8, 221 Elm. "He didn't suffer any life-threatening injuries, thankfully. He had a sprained ankle and a dent in his bike helmet.

"If he hadn't had the helmet on, it would have been much worse," said McKenna. "I can't emphasize enough the need to wear a helmet while riding a bike."

The accident happened around 8 a.m. Tuesday. Damian went through the stop sign at Third and Elm streets and was struck by a car driven by Lindsey M. Roberts, 17, 326 Indiana, said McKenna. He said Roberts was only traveling 25 mph and that made a difference, too.

The accident just knocked Damian down. Police and ambulance personnel arrived quickly and Damian was treated and released.

McKenna said it also served as a reminder that school is back in session and drivers, both those on bikes and in vehicles, need to be paying closer attention.

It was the only major item on this week's police report. There were two other reports involving Baker and one found property report of note. All three incidents occurred on Aug. 26.

At 10:50 a.m., a 21-year-old Baker University student came to the police station to report that her debit card had been stolen and someone had withdrawn more than $800. It was unknown who took the card.

At 11 p.m. that night, officers were called to campus by Baker security in regards to five teenagers causing trouble, including trying to open doors at Constant Hall and urinating on the grounds, said McKenna. The 16-, 17- and 18-year-old males and two 17-year-old females denied any wrongdoing and were asked to leave the campus.

About 15 minutes later, an officer was checking Grove Park and found a marijuana pipe with marijuana in it. It's at the police station.

"Anyone who would like to claim it can do so," said McKenna.
